Lan Anh Hoang is Professor in Development Studies, School of Social and Political Sciences. She received her MA and PhD in Development Studies from the School of International Development, University of East Anglia, UK and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Asian MetaCentre for Population and Sustainable Development Analysis, Singapore, before joining the University of Melbourne. Her research on migration and gender has been published in leading journals such as Gender and Society, Gender, Place and Culture, Global Networks, Population, Space and Place, Geoforum, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Mobilities, Asian Studies Review, and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies. Lan is author of 'Vietnamese migrants in Russia: mobility in times of uncertainty' (Amsterdam University Press 2020), winner of The Association of Mainland Southeast Asia Scholars Book Prize in 2022. She is co-editor of Transnational Labour Migration, Remittances, and the Changing Family in Asia' (2015) and Money and Moralities in Contemporary Asia' (2019).

Lan recently completed a study on brokerage and migrant networks in the Vietnam-Australia migration corridor and is conducting fieldwork on undocumented migrants in Japan. She is Regional Editor (Mainland Southeast Asia) of Asian Studies Review and Associate Editor of Springer's Global Vietnam book series. She worked in the development sector in Vietnam before entering academia.
